Plants

Depending on what you want to grow will determine the type of plants or seeds you will be buying. You can plant whatever you want, and seeds do just as well as plants. A good rule to follow though is to have some plants planted along with your seeds. The reason is a plant will have an established root system, and in order for your system to work well, the roots of the plants will help with your fish, so by having some established plants will help the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate cycle of your system.

You can grow anything you like, strawberries, rhubarb, peas, beans, and yes, even root crops like carrots and potatoes. That is the beauty of aquaponics, you can grow whatever it is you like to eat. But, just like any gardening endeavor it takes work, and practice, so keep that in mind when you are getting started with your system. With time and practice, you can be successful at aquaponics, and producing your own food.

There are many helpful books, websites and YouTube videos that can help you along your aquaponic journey. My personal favorite book is Aquaponic Gardening by Sylvia Bernstein. This is by far the best book I have read on the subject, and it goes into a lot more detail than I can go into here. But like with anything, you can never have too much knowledge, so get as much information as you can once you decide how you would like to move forward with your own aquaponics system.
